A new Consumer Report issued yesterday, revealed ratings for popular cereals that are high in sugar content. Golden Crisp and Honey Smacks were rated among the worst as being more than 50 percent sugar per serving -- that's about as much sugar as a glazed doughnut! Nine others that were studied are made up of at least 40 percent sugar.
In addition to sugar, another "S" word to be on the look out for is sodium. When you think cereal, it's not likely that sodium pops into your head; but there are indeed some cereals that are sneakily sodium-laden, including: Rice Krispies, Corn Pops, and Honey Smacks.
The most healthful brands rated by Consumer Reports were, Cheerios with three grams of fiber per serving and one gram of sugar, Kix, Honey Nut Cheerios, and Life.
Reading this report reminded me how important it is to look at food labels when grocery shopping. In addition to the ever popular fat and calorie content, remember to also take a peek at sugar, sodium and fiber content of foods, because often times I don't always associate "sweet" foods as items to watch for sodium, and vice versa.
Breakfast - don't start your day without it! (A good, balanced one that is!)
