Here's Part Deux of my Top Tips on Becoming More Physically Active.
- Walk, walk, walk – You may not burn a ton of calories, but getting into a habit of walking is a cheap and easy way to positively impact your lifestyle. You’ll improve your fitness and get peace of mind. Start walking places that are less than a mile from your home, take walking breaks throughout the day, take the stairs – the steps add up. And, it helps provide some clarity and a good break away from your desk!
- Track/Journal: what you eat AND your activity – know what you’re putting into your body. Keep track for 3 days at first just to get a sneak peek. Write down the foods as soon as you eat them, rather than waiting until the end of the day. Studies have shown that people who track what they're eating lose more weight and maintain that weight loss longer than those who don't use a food log. And, track your activity: the time, type, and intensity. It’s a great way to track your progress and to visually “see” what you’re actually doing.
- Find activities that bring you joy and are fun. Try new things! Think the treadmill is boring? Tune your tv to a station playing fast paced music, or check out some of the fitness programs on tv, look through the adult education class catalog in your community, check out a new fitness DVD (Amazon usually has great deals), ask a friend to join you in participating in a 5K. Go on, get out of a rut and challenge yourself to try something new.
- Make it fun for the whole family. Become a kid again and join in the fun - Check out this Zoom site for some cool ideas!
- Don’t wait until Monday. If you fall off your horse, get back up right away. A lot of damage can be done between the time you fall off and Monday. Don’t dig yourself a deeper hole, get right out, shake it off, and climb back up to the top.
