Feeling Squirrelly?

It’s officially fall and our summer warmth and sunshine is drawing to a close. The dropping temps, darker mornings, and season premieres of new TV shows can make it more challenging for us to get up and moving.

Instead of being beckoned by the couch, channel your inner squirrel. You’re saying, “What are you talking about?! Squirrel?! You’re nuts!” J But, bear with me a moment, because, I think that this is a rather apt analogy for eating healthy and exercising.

Think about the squirrels and how active they are right now. They know that winter’s right around the corner, and they are out there working their little tails off, scurrying to and fro collecting nuts. They’re exercising and eating healthy!

I say this about the fall and exercise. Fall is the PERFECT time to build up your routine, to develop a pattern of getting up and moving. The schedule and behaviors that you set now, during the fall, will help carry you into the winter, and I know we definitely all want to be ahead of the game once winter settles in! Set your goals, whether it’s waking up a little bit earlier, or reserving your TV time for when you’re on the treadmill; commit to yourself the same way you did during the summer. There are still the same number of hours in the day….it’s just going to be a little bit darker and cooler out. Once you accept that, ask yourself what motivates you. Maybe you’re due for a new pair of workout leggings to beat the chill; or you’re going to reward yourself by setting aside some Sunday afternoons for a new fall flick or couch time with your hubby.

OK now back to squirrels :) these critters are on to something. The little seed and nut treasures that they horde are perfect fall snacks! They’re full of protein, so you’ll feel fuller longer. They’re also made up of healthy fats, which will be helpful in keeping your hair and skin looking good despite the dry weather; and they’re heart healthy. Just remember to not overload on them, because they are calorie dense. Keep your serving size to about a handful (1-2 oz) and go for the unsalted varieties.

Almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, some pine nuts, pistachios, walnuts; and flax seeds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds, are all good bets. Here’s a recipe for a tasty trail mix packed with flavor ideas!

Break it down. What is your fall fabulousness health and fitness goals?

Think I'll mix up some of this for the tailgates!! Never thought of trail mix as a snack option. Thanks for the idea.

I'm planning a lunch group in Oct. Sept just simply got away from me.
